HDI Exhibition pick: “Cindy Sherman: Imitation of Life” at the Broad in LA

You may have seen our last Musings post, which was all about our visit to the stunning new Broad museum in Los Angeles. The first special exhibition is a fantastic and very comprehensive survey of the work of the artist Cindy Sherman. The Broads started collecting the work of Cindy Sherman in the early 1980’s and they have an impressive 127 images in their collection, which is also the largest holding of her work in the world. We really enjoyed seeing “Cindy Sherman: Imitation of Life” and seeing so much of Sherman’s work in one exhibition.  Her decades-long performative practice has produced many of contemporary art’s most iconic and influential images. In her work, Sherman proposes powerful questions about identity, representation, and the role of images in contemporary culture. From screen siren and pin-up to socialite and businesswoman, the roles Sherman depicts through her monumental body of work provocatively engage with contemporary life’s mediated personas and stereotypes, drawing not only from art history but also from the histories of advertising, cinema, and media.
