Our HDI Exhibition pick for March 2015 is “High Tea: Glorious Manifestations East and West” currently on view at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach. This wonderful exhibition displays ceramics, metalwork, lacquer, glass, paintings, fashion, and furniture from eight cultures: China, England, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Russia, and the United States and highlights the culture of drinking tea and the traditions surrounding it, displaying the differences from one society to another. The exhibition includes 182 objects spanning 1,200 years, from the 700’s to the 1900’s and of course our focus was the Modernist perspective of the tea ceremony. Highlights include a splendid Godwin table, stylish couture fashion, the extraordinary square Christopher Dresser teapot, a rigorous and pure Josef Hoffmann tea set on tray, the classic Bauhaus Wagenfeld / Jenaer Glass tea set, a rare Harry Bertoia / Cranbrook three piece spherical tea set and lastly the iconic Saarinen urn from Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
