HDI EXHIBITION PICK: “Artistic Furniture of the Gilded Age” at the Met
This exhibition had us super excited and we can only highly recommend that you do not miss this one! Although we are very familiar with the work of the Herter Brothers and have a wonderful cabinet in our collection, we were not so familiar with the work of George A. Schastey (American, 1839–1894). “Artistic Furniture of the Gilded Age” focuses on the Gilded Age period from the late nineteenth-century in America. Schastey operated a very successful decorating firm in New York City in the late nineteenth century and worked with some of the wealthiest clients in the country. This exhibition shows elaborate woodwork and decorations and highlights Schastey’s work and influence at that time and beyond. In an adjoining gallery you will find the work of the Herter Brothers that were commissioned for William H. Vanderbilt.
Enjoy our favorite pictures of this very luxurious and artistic time period. “Artistic Furniture of the Gilded Age” is on view through May 1, 2016.
