HDI Exhibition Pick: “Lisa Sotilis: The Power of the Greek Myth”, Museo Franz Mayer, Mexico City
We recently made our way to Mexico City to see the amazing exhibition of our dear friend Lisa Sotilis entitled “Lisa Sotilis: The Power of the Greek Myth” at the Franz Mayer Museum.
This spectacular exhibit has been fully and beautifully realized by the Franz Mayer Museum under the directorship of Mr. Hector Rivero Borrell and in partnership with His Excellency Mr. Petros Panayotopoulos, Ambassador of Greece to Mexico. This very special and grand exhibition showcases Lisa’s bold and dramatic jewelry designs that are executed mostly in high carat gold (18-24k) and a few in pure silver. We were also smitten with the peaceful and jewel-like setting of the Franz Mayer Museum, what a fantastic place to hold this grand exhibition!
Lisa Sotilis was a muse to Giorgio de Chirico’s in his later life and did most of the modeling and finishing work on his sculpture. Lisa was also a very close confidante to Rene Magritte in the years before he died, she was solely represented by the Alexander Iolas Gallery which was the most important gallery for European Art in New York in the 1960’s and 70’s and was the companion of and traveled all over the world with Rudolf Nureyev. Lisa did exclusive fashion shows with Madam Gres who featured only her jewelry in several of the Gres couture shows, had an exclusive with Cartier in the 1970’s and her jewelry was collected by Salvador Dali, as well as royal members from all over the world and glamorous Hollywood stars such as Claudia Cardinale !
Her jewelry is very much of the moment and has the sense of freedom of an expressionistic style backed by the substance of historical workmanship and integrity and also jewelry that is steeped in the history of the legendary ancient gold jewelers of Greece and Rome! We hope you enjoy our photos and we hope you can see this wonderful exhibit, on view until June 19th, in person!
