HDI Exhibition Tip: “Julius Klinger: Posters for a Modern Age”, Wolfsonian-FIU, Miami Beach
We really enjoyed the “Julius Klinger: Posters for a Modern Age” at the Wolfsonian in Miami Beach. Born in Vienna in 1867, Julius Klinger became one of the leading graphic artists of the modern age. His poster designs, book and magazine illustrations, campaigns, brand and typographical designs were ground breaking and innovative. Klinger studied at the Technisches Gewerbemuseum in Vienna and in 1895 went on to work for the Viennese fashion magazine “Wiener Mode”. Here he met Koloman Moser, who later would become his teacher. In 1896 Klinger moved to Munich and worked as an illustrator for the Meggendorfer-Blätter and others. From 1897 to 1902 he was a collaborator to the eponymous Jugendstil magazine Die Jugend. In 1897 he relocated to Berlin, where he worked extensively as a commercial graphic artist until 1915. He returned to Vienna where he stayed until his deportation to a Minsk extermination camp, where he died in 1942.
Klinger’s artistic reputation was built on the strength and range of his designs, which often shared a signature style characterized by graphic simplicity and directness—whether in the form of illustrations, graphic ornament, or his most famous posters. This exhibition is a wonderful and thorough study of Klinger’s work and his graphical genius. We hope you enjoy our favorite photos.
