Treasures from India: Jewels from the Al-Thani Collection
October 28, 2014 – January 25, 2015, Metropolitan Museum New York.
The Metropolitan Museum is always a great place to get lost in art, but seeing this exhibit currently at the Met, you not only get lost in the beauty of the 60 jewels on view, but also bedazzled! Treasures from India: Jewels from the Al-Thani Collection can be found in the Islamic Wing and the collection by Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al-Thani is truly spectacular! You find yourself immersed in a “Schatzkammer” of major gems and jewelry. The Indian jewels are astounding with very impressive diamonds, the Cartier jewels in the Indian and Mughal Style are amazing creations, either incorporating historic Indian gems or featuring the Indian taste of the Art Deco period, and are icons of the 1920’s and 1930’s. The finale to the exhibition are two jewels each by the Contemporary jewelry stars JAR and Viren Bhagat. These magnificent brooches certainly hold their own amongst this historical collection and bring the dazzle of gems up to the minute. Enjoy!
